The Lawn @ Shenton Way

If you think salads are plain, you clearly haven’t been to The Lawn Cafe and Grill Bar at Shenton Way. Clean eaters and gym buffs, meats in your greens are on their way to you – rejoice!

Though hidden away from plain sight in the basement of AXA Tower, The Lawn is no stranger to hectic lunch crowds. Come dinner time, dusk light streams in from the glass panes as the pace slows, transforming the interior into a cosy hideout that’s perfect for some alone time or a meal with friends.

Besides boasting a fair share of walk-in customers as well as delivery orders on a daily basis, The Lawn also provides catering services, hosts private parties and corporate events.

This cafe is the brainchild of a young man who was inspired by the salad scene of California, and so decided to bring the ingenious concept back home to Singapore. The idea is simple: by introducing juicy and succulent grilled meats as well as an array of toppings and dressings to choose from alongside your veggies, salads become less boring, more exciting and sustainable as part of a balanced diet!

At The Lawn, you can trust that your salad is wholly suited to your taste because every component is customisable. Creating your own salad is simple with the order chit you’ll be given, and it only comprises of 4 simple steps (though if you’re like me, you might spend a long time being undecided about the toppings. Really. Everything sounds so good).

1. Choose your base:

You either have the (Mesclun) Salad or Olive Rice. Easy.

2. Choose your grills:

For a couple of extra bucks or more, you get to choose from 10 tantalising grills which include char-grilled Cajun Chicken, prawns with garlic, butter-seared dory and Ben’s Beef Rub.

3. Choose your toppings (for olive rice, skip this step):

With your fresh mesclun salad, you get to choose 5 toppings out of massive selection of 28! Some of which include almonds, cashews, couscous, alfalfa sprouts and even tofu.

4. Choose your dressing:

Finally, take forever deciding between 14 homemade dressings and you’re done!

Olive Rice (S$8.90, with side salad + 1 dressing)

For the salad bowl, the toppings I picked were olives, tofu, cashews, chestnuts and parmesan cheese – loved them all. As for the olive rice, while it didn’t look like much at first, we dug in and realised that shiz was freaking addictive. For a lack of better description, it tastes like rice fried with preserved olive vegetables (橄榄菜) that we eat with teochew porridge. You know you love it. -guilty pleasure-

Grills, clockwise from top: Char-grilled prawns with Garlic (S$4), Butter Seared Dory with Parsley Rub (S$4), Char-grilled Cajun Chicken (S$3), Ben’s Beef Rub (S$5)

All the grills are cooked to order to ensure freshness. While it was a tad dry, my favourite of the ones I tried was the Char-grilled Cajun Chicken simply because it was incredibly flavourful. The beef rub didn’t cut it for me as it was overcooked. Dory and prawns are good choices on days you want something lighter or to pair with a particular dressing that goes great with seafood.

Dressings, clockwise from bottom left: Wasahoney, Wafu, Honeyball, Citrus, Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Manly Mango, Red Island, Me So Spicy

Of the 8 different dressings I tried, I particularly enjoyed the Apple Cider Vinaigrette, Manly Mango and Me So Spicy because I thought they went pretty well with my toppings.

Pulled Duck Sandwich (S$8.90)

If you happen to be looking for something more hardy than a salad, you should be pleased to know The Lawn just introduced a brand new Pulled Duck Sandwich to the menu. Never had pulled duck before, but it was moist and flavourful and the caramelised onions were totally bomb! Just thought that I would really have preferred if the olive bread was toasted so it doesn’t turn soggy.

Know that there really are no hard and fast rules as to what certain toppings should go with what meats/dressings, but a way to make your salad taste more balanced, if you will, is to select contrasting flavours and textures. For instance, acidic toppings like green apple or pineapple are good for cutting the richness of thicker dressings like wafu, while crunchy almonds and cashews could work nicely with tofu. That being said, the choice is all yours!
