Before taking off to Penang to spend her lunar new year, Alexandra decided to take me to her ultimate favorite hang out spot at the moment: The Bravery. Nestled amidst rows of hardware stores dealing with metal, tools and machinery in the Lavender district, this place is to me, one gem of a cafe.
With the concealed entrance, tinted windows and strings of colorful lights, the fitout of this space carried a hint of playfulness paired with unpolished industrial chic vibes. I loved how bright the interior was as the entire place was adequately washed with natural sun.
My iced mocha was a robust offering rich in chocolate, easy to drink and simply delightful. Alex’s lavender latte came silky with a fleeting kiss of floral notes.
Much like their sister cafe The Plain, the small menu at The Bravery tips towards simple and safer choices such as eggs on toast, pancakes and ciabattas. Alex’s pick was the hearty Pancakes Stack. We both found that after a while it got too cloying, and we were more than thankful for that dollop of ricotta cheese. Otherwise, this was a rather reliable and solid version.
As I was craving something savory, Alex recommended the Brave Begedil consisting of poached eggs, avocado and turkey bacon atop a begedil (malay for potato patty). This was pretty much their take on the classic hash and eggs. We both loved this dish! (though I suppose the begedil as the anchor ingredient could have been more crisp so as to be true to its name)
With the cozy, relaxed vibes and especially the few friendly peeps running the show, I think it would be easy for me to return to The Bravery over and over on those slow weekday afternoons. Yes, I have hopped on board.
On a side note, happy Chinese New Year to all my readers and friends! Have a blessed year of the Horse in 2014! ♥
