Tonkichi @ Ngee Ann City

If you’ve been on the hunt for some seriously good tonkatsu, look no further – for we have Tonkichi Tonkatsu Restaurant!

After hearing from Joshua who applied for their membership card, I went to do a little search and found that Tonkichi, like Domani and Rive Gauche, is owned by the Pokka Food Group. He can now use his membership card for discounts at any of these places. (More reason to go and eat? I think so too!)

The interior of Tonkichi is reminiscent of a typical Japanese eatery, with clean and fairly simple furnishings that provide a minimalistic yet cosy feel.

Upon ordering – like most other places serving tonkatsu – little mortars containing sesame seeds are provided. You will simply have to grind them with the pestle, then pour the tonkatsu sauce over it. After mixing, you will have your very own tonkatsu sauce!

The incredibly sinful menu(definitely not for the health-conscious!) offers a wide variety of mainly delicious deep-fried offerings. Many will probably go for their signature Hire Katsu Set($20.90), Rosu Katsu Set($22.90) or even the Tonkichi Set($72.00) for those who are sharing! I wanted to have some seafood, so I chose the Yakubari Set($25.90).

Service was very prompt and attentive, and our food arrived in just around 15 minutes. I loved that everything was deep-fried to gorgeous golden-brown perfection without being excessively oily, and that the meat also remained beautifully moist and tender.

In all, I think Tonkichi is surely worth a visit if you’re craving for genuinely delicious tonkatsu! Also, their attentive service and lovely interior design are definitely pluses in my books.
